Ambience: *** excellentNotes: wonderful decor...old EBT store
Food: * averageNotes: first time I have been disappointed here
Service: poorNotes: We were more casually dressed, and spent less...see below.
Favorites: used to be Caesar Salad
Comments: Have always gone to EBT for any special occasion, full dinner, and had great food and service. (Though if you order the pepper steak...be ready for LOTS of pepper...it can really overpower the delicious sauce!). Craving their Cesear Salad and chocolate souffle, we stopped in, casually dressed (NOT jeans), on a weeknight after a meeting, for a light meal. Although there were few patrons and very few tables occupied, we waited an inordinate amount of time to be seated (more than 15 minutes). No one else was waiting to be seated. After being seated, we waited a long time for even the most basic service, and were still waiting for the traditional bread basket 15 minutes after that...finally had to ask for it...and then waited a good bit longer, and asked yet another server. When our server found out we wanted only salad and dessert and beverages for two, the entire tone altered. Had I not had a heavy-duty craving, we would have left long before. The Caesar Salad has always been exquisite, traditional, and consistent, but this preparer dripped a LOT of tabasco sauce in it. As I have never counted drops before, I didn't question it, until I tried to eat it. It was inedible. We talked to the preparer, who he said he had been "experimenting" lately with quantity ... and that each one prepared it differently ... and that most people liked it ... so.... No offer was made to replace it ... just acted as if it was no big deal. The souffle was good, but EBT probably won't be our special occasion, or any occasion restaurant anymore. Just our perception, but it seemed that our "appearance" (very good casual...slacks and shirt for him, pants outfit for me) was frowned upon from the get-go, and things went downhill from there. The overall atmosphere was snobby, condescending and the service was incredibly poor.

Favorites: Ahi tuna, pepper steak
Comments: I read the previous review of EBT and I almost decided not to go. I had heard that they were making the place more casual and the review was 2 years ago, so we gave it a chance. I am really glad we did. We went in an the hostess was very welcoming, and they had a jazz duo in the lounge which was fun and unexpected. She took us to a very nice table-the place has great ambiance. I looked over the menu and was surprised to find it not as expensive as I thought it would be. We ordered a bottle of wine (the wines were surprisingly reasonable) and appetizers. We had excellent crab cakes and vegetable spring rolls which had this sauce ... With the salads came the "traditional bread basket" garlic toasts which I guess have been around at this restaurant forever. I had the Ahi tuna for my entree which was perfectly prepared and very fresh. My husband decided to try out the pepper steak. Our waitress, who was very nice and not "snooty" prepared it tableside which was a great show. The sauce for this steak is luscious! I didn't feel it was too peppery at all. In fact it was just the right amount of spice to counter the sweetness of the cream. We decided to have the waitress prepare banana fosters at the table, although neither of us really needed dessert, and again we were glad we did. I have never had anything like it! I know it is a very traditional dessert, but I have never gotten an opportunity to have it before. We will definitely go back to EBT again, and not just for special occasions.

Comments: We are not from KC. My husband and I joined another local couple. We had wine, salad tableside, bananas foster tableside and everything in between. It was a wonderful experience and one we hope to have again. We eat out 3 to 4 times a week and felt that this was one of our more positive experiences.
