Favorites: none
Comments: We used to go to the Berliner Bear when I was in high-school German club. It was always a great place, with German music, efficient waitresses, terrific food, and a "gemutlich" atmosphere. But everytime we return to the Berliner Bear for nostalgia's sake, we regret it. This last time was indeed our last. The waitress arrived with our beers, and floating on the top of the foam were dead bugs--obviously they had been in the bottom of the glasses for some time. What really annoyed me was that they charged us for the beers anyway. Likewise, the silverware seemed sticky and dirty, and the whole restaurant looked as if it had not been cleaned in years.
Unfortunately, the food was strictly substandard. The Weinerschnitzel was greasy and tough, and the canned peas and carrots simply don't cut it as a side dish in this day and age.
For first-rate (or even second-rate) German food, Kansas Citians can definately do better elsewhere.

Comments: Their Reuben is the best in town! Very well balanced, delicious sandwich. Never had "bad" food there ... feels like a mom and pop place. Very informal.

Favorites: Weiner schnitzel/sauerbraten
Comments: I haven't eaten German cuisine since Emile's closed on the Plaza. The atmosphere and interior, although small was a quaint version of the pubs in Frankfurt and Berlin. Sehr gut!

Food: * averageNotes: actually soome good some sub standard. Slipped badly.
Service: * averageNotes: Last time I was there the cook openly yelled at the waitress
Favorites: roulladen
Comments: The food quality has slipped badly over the past twenty years. Last time the dumplings and gravy tasted like they were from a mix. Silver ware and plate were dirty and sent back. Roulladen gravy also tasted like a mix. Can no longer recommend Berliner Bear.

Restaurant: Berliner BearLocation: 75/Wornall
Cuisine: GermanPrice: $$ inexpensive
Ambience: * averageNotes: Not impressed
Food: substandardNotes: TERRIBLE. Microwave dinners taste better.
Service: poorNotes: Male server used profanity in front of diners.
Favorites: Nothing
Comments: The male employee used profanity to the female employee (who was obviously his wife) in front of the diners. These people need to learn how to run a business! The food was so terrible, I was indignant that I actually had to pay for it.

Food: *** excellentNotes: as good as always
Service: *** excellentNotes: never had any trouble
Favorites: Cordon Bleu, cold plate, cheesecake
Comments: This is a great place to eat. I have been going there ever since I was born. The people are very nice and love to chat. The food is great and my grandpa says it is true German. I would hope so since the woman who opened it moved to KC with her family over 30 years ago and opened it. They make everything. Wilhelm is an awesome cook. To top it all off the cheesecake is the best in town I think.

Restaurant: Berliner BearLocation: Wornall Waldo Area
Cuisine: GermanPrice: $$ inexpensive
Ambience: * averageNotes: old bar decor
Food: * averageNotes: did not have everything in stock
Service: * averageNotes: Used children after 9pm as waiters around alcohol, cursed
Favorites: used to be sausage
Comments: This man was a real gem. He had a young boy working in the restaurant after 9pm around alcohol. He was cursing at his staff and he was very mean to everyone around. Unpleasant person to be around. I went to the kitchen and talked to the cooks about how they don't have to tolerate that kind of treatment and they were like "we're used to it, thats how he is". This man is abusive to his employees, his child labor, and is not fun to eat around. You never forget an 8 year waiter around beer. You also never forget cursing and being mentally cruel to others while you are eating. Needs to calm down in there. I don't like eating in bad environments. Don't take people who can't handle the roughness.

Comments: Had read that the restaurant was serving breakfast on Sunday's, so we stopped by. Sat down and waited about 10 minutes-- noticed there were 10 other parties in the dining area and only one had food, everyone else was waiting to order. Only one server-- so we figured if it was going to take that long to order, who knew how long it would take to get food. So we left.

Comments: Our German club in college visited the Berliner Bear once, and I never forgot it. I now live in KC, and take friends and family from out of town here. The owner and staff are always friendly. They even put up with my attempts to speak German! I only wish the menu offered more choices!

Restaurant: Berliner BearLocation: Wornall Road
Cuisine: GermanPrice: $$ inexpensive
Ambience: tackyNotes: I like it - a throwback to the 70s. In Germany.
Food: *** excellentNotes: Great! Just ignore the canned peas and carrots
Service: * averageNotes: The main guy there has a lot of attitude - we liked it.
Favorites: Schnitzel a la Holstein
Comments: This place is not your usual restaurant. Yeah, there might be some cursing, and a bug in your beer, but that's what makes it fun. We had a good time here, very authentic (complete with surly old man running the place).

Restaurant: Berliner BearLocation: south of 75th on Wornall
Cuisine: GermanPrice: $$$ moderate
Ambience: tackyNotes: Yelled at us across restaurant
Food: substandardNotes: Don't really know, left after being yelled at.
Service: poorNotes: Very attentive, if you call being yelled at attentive.
Favorites: Didn't eat there. We left.
Comments: We were out for Sunday brunch. Most restaurants serve brunch until 2 pm, so we didn't think about it being 12:05. We walked in, and as we were waiting to be seated, a lean male approx. 35 years old yelled at us, like you hear bad dog owners yelling at their dogs, across the entire restaurant, very very rudely informing us that they stop serving at noon. With the other patrons staring at us, obviously embarassed, we left. My wife was nearly in tears, I was so angry I wanted to make a scene, and I'm the most mellow guy you are likely to meet. We will never, never, never set foot in there again.
