Restaurant: La Cocina del PuercoLocation: Metcalf & 91st, OPKS
Cuisine: MexicanPrice: $$ inexpensive
Ambience: ** very goodNotes:
Food: *** excellentNotes: Most authentic Mexican food in KC
Service: ** very goodNotes: Deli-style service
Favorites: The corn tortillas
Comments: Authentic Mexican food isn't deep fried and isn't covered in sour cream; you'll find neither at La Cocina. Most KC mexican food is a variation of Tex-Mex while La Cocina is closer to real Mexican food. Try the tacos with pork or the chile rellenos.

Comments: Just a quick note DON'T MISS THE BURNT CREAM. it 's too bad that most people see the pic of the burnt cream. but until you try it you will never know. It's to die for. It's really hard to describe it's heavy, but light what i liked about it was not eggy lt's kinda of like a custard but not eggy but more of a taste of real whipped cream. the texture is so smoothe it will melt in your mouth. Don't leave la cocina del puerco without and share with someone you love. used to work in the area i'd go buy some and take it back to the office with 5 spoons and every body loved it really they should give it away to everbody because I thing it's a secret. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED IT'S TRULEY WONDERFUL.I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHAT YOU THINK.

Comments: Great, authentic Mexican food and live bands. New owner and former owner both working in the restaurant most of the time. New owner has made some great renovations and the new music line-up is fun. Cheap Corona on Fridays. Check out the patio in the evening. Definitely think the food has improved with change of owner.

Comments: I have been dining here for 5 years and was excited to see the new management upgrading the facilities and adding new menu items. The new seafood items are fantastic and it seems as though nothing else has been changed on the menu. Also I'm a teacher so the Teacher Discount Nite on Thursdays is a big bonus.

Comments: My extended family and friends make a point to visit La Cocina at least once a week for the great food, excellent margaritas and relaxed atmosphere. I will admit the first time I visited La Cocina I was looking for the traditional Americanized Mexican food. It took me a second try to buy into their authentic Mexican food and rich flavors and now all other Mexican restaurants taste like Taco Bell. Every week I go in I have a difficult time deciding between my favorites. My family, who live in Colorado, also can’t get enough of it. Every time they come out they insist on a visit to the kitchen of the pig and they live in western Colorado where you would think they would get good authentic Mexican food but they insist that there is nothing like La Cocina. I encourage lovers of Mexican food to step outside their Americanized view of Mexican food and visit La Cocina or give it another try it you’ve been in the past, they have improved on their ambience and are un! der new ownership and are constantly improving on the little things. I truly do not think there is another restaurant, in this price range, that has better Mexican or better food in general in the KC area.

Ambience: ** very goodNotes: Like A Trip to Tijuana!
Food: *** excellentNotes: _
Service: ** very goodNotes: Fast, fast, fast
Favorites: Carnitas
Comments: My first husband was of mexican descent, and his mother made the best mexican food I've ever eaten. She's a dear lady, so please don't tell her the La Cocina is nipping at her heels. First, I love the ambience of this place. It is fun, casual, colorful and comfortable. It makes you feel like you're on a summer road trip to Tijuana. The food is always very fresh and fast. You place your order at the counter and it's served up in seconds. I always judge a mexican restaurant by their carnitas and their tamales. If they can get those dishes right, everything else will be good. La Cocina does both very well. The carnitas are slow-cooked to tender perfection. They truly melt in your mouth. I also love the beans. No mushy 'refried' beans. They serve whole, tender, slow-cooked beans that are as good as the main dish. Lots of different fresh salsas to choose from, suited to all tastes. Come hungry!
