Favorites: Vegetable platter and/or T-bone
Comments: One of my favorite KC area restaurants. You may have to wait a little while to get in on weekends or holidays (I went there on New Year's Eve and had to wait 45 minutes), but it's always worth the wait! The steaks are done to perfection and the meat is top quality and fresh. The vegetable platter is prepared with Mesquite and the rice served with it is so tasty I asked the chef for the recipe. The staff gives you just the right amount of attention to make you feel glad you chose to eat there. I recommend it highly!!!

Comments: The BEST fillet I've had in K.C., so tender and cooked to perfection! DELICIOUS!! Known for their steaks, but the pasta and seafood dishes are also A+. My husband and I celebrated our anniversary there in April; when we arrived, they had our table specially decorated for the occasion ... nice touch. I've been to the other steak restaurants and this is my favorite. Save room for dessert.

Service: **** superbNotes: Very friendly wait-staff
Favorites: Disappointed in the lack of Prime Rib
Comments: First timer--I ordered an 18 oz. Cowboy Ribeye. Excellent flavor, but had too much marbling for my liking (typical of most Ribeyes). The mashed potatoes were delicious but the onion rings were not that appealing. My date absolutely loved her filet. It is her favorite restaurant.

Comments: Too expensive for the level of food + service. The waitress screwed up one of my drinks so I had to send it back and get a fresh one. When we got the bill, the drink had not been taken off. The quality of the meat was not worth the price. I think the 12 oz KC strip which was average at best was about $25. I'd rather go across the street and eat at Houston's instead.

Comments: BEST steak I've had in K.C., Nice and tender. Cooked just the way I asked for. The whole meal was DELICIOUS. My wife and I celebrated our anniversary there in August; when we arrived, they had our table specially decorated for the occasion. Very nice touch. I've been to many other steak restaurants aound town and this is ourfavorite. The dessert selection was excellent! One special note, the portions were perfect.

Favorites: steak, seafood, pasta and dessert - must have dessert
Comments: I've eaten at this restraunt for over 15 years and have never been disappointed. They decorate the table for special occasions if you call for reservations. The food and service is one of the best in the KC area. You will regret not trying them. The steaks melt in your mouth, bread is crisp on the outside and soft inside, excellent selection of salads and desserts are a must. Wonderful choice for special occasions if you can't eat out often.

Comments: We made 7:30 seating walk in at 7:15 was told they had not got the 7:00 seated yet. it would be about 20 min.We stood in the bar 30 min. asked again was told were doing our best. As we waited we were talking with people who were also waiting that just walk in to eat and were seated before us. We were not seated until 8:45 The waiting area and Bar was so full of people we were moved and push each time more people enter. I feel that if you can't be seated within 30min of your time you should be told upfront so we could go somewhere else and walk in should be told as well and not seated because of the party size. Each 20 min we asked we kept getting rude remakes from the host. Do to the wait we had to pay our sitter more and we did not like eating so late. Food was cold and fish was hard.

Comments: This is the only restaurant in the metro KC area that consistently exceeds our expectations. They have a complete wine list that compliments the menu perfectly and their martinis are fabulous. The food is not fancy in presentation, but is packed full of flavor and is always delicious.

Favorites: filet, shrimp cocktail and crab cakes
Comments: The pricing: You get what you pay for. I started off with shrimp cocktail. It was the biggest shrimp I've ever seen for a cocktail. Outstanding flavor! The steak melted in my mouth. The service was first class. My husband and I spent $110, tip included. We will go back. We discovered Gilbert's offers patrons to join a club which saves the customer money in the long run. It cost $10 to join. The music was jazz type. The bathrooms were very clean. If you haven't tried J. Gilbert's, you are missing out on a great meal.

Service: poorNotes: The waiter brought out swordfish when we ordered steaks.
Favorites: rib eye steak
Comments: This was our 22nd wedding aniversary. My wife got out of the hospital 3 weeks before. She deserved a nice night out! The waiter only had 2 other tables because it was 9:30 pm. The couple seated last of the 3 had eaten, and paid their bill before we got our main course. We ordered rib eye steaks. A female brought a tray out with steaks on it and our male waiter said he had made a mistake on our order and she took it away. After 20 minutes he brought us swordfish we explained that we had ordered rib eye medium well done. I am sorry but I suspect he served our order to the other couple because they said they were in a hurry. After another 20 minutes we finally had our steaks and both other couples were long gone! Needless to say, we liked the food but we will never go back!

Comments: We ate here for our anniversary. The atmosphere was decent, with dim to moderate light and dark tables, though not elegant. All waiters and waitresses wore black. You heard live music came from the smoking section. The music was not loud, but not relaxing or romantic. The first booth we were given was the smallest one I've ever seen - too small to eat at meal but adequate for coffee or dessert. We asked to be moved to a larger booth. Our steaks were good but we had to wait 45 minutes. Our waiter was good. Overall, we were a little disappointed after reading good reviews. Ruths Chris is a better for special occasions.

Comments: My husband and I go to J. Gilbert's regulary and love it. The food is always of great quality, fresh, consistently prepared and not over seasoned - ever. We like the lower level of the restaurant as it is much more intimate and cozy (and request re-seating if they try to place us elsewhere), but the bar area is fun, too. The wait staff has been consistently good with some that are truly the epitome of fine wait staff, some that need significantly more experience and practice. Most do a perfectly adequate job. When we've found errors on our bill (not too unusual, unfortunately), they've fixed them right away and usually insisted on comping something - dessert, etc. Sometimes they do rush the timing of our meal, but we're usually there for a leisurely, romantic meal with no time constraints - which isn't great for turning tables :). They do not, however, ever make us feel rushed. I'm a bit of "chain" snob but I love J. Gilbert's. They do a wonderful job. Tip: If you go, sign up for their points program. It makes a J. Gilbert's habit much more affordable.
